“Fargo, S5.” “Better Call Saul, S6.”
“Fargo” (Hulu) Season 5, black comedy crime drama, inspired by the 1996 Coen brothers film of the same name. Set in North Dakota and Minnesota in 2019, the plot has been teased with the following questions: "When is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn't yours?”
Primarily in North Dakota and Minnesota in late 2019, a housewife was kidnapped, escaped, and kidnapped again. The hyper wifey who is also some sort of half-MacGyver and half-Catwoman is portrayed by a kickass Juno Temple, who should have won a deserved acting award.
Then there's another breed of crazy, Roy Tillman, a cold and surreal Jon Hamm. A matriarch, Lorraine Lyon, who can be as deadpan scary as Don Vito Corleone but still sweet and homely as Julia Child. That'd be a fun to watch Jennifer Jason Leigh.
But the character that is real intriguing is Ole Munch, an apparently deranged dude who laboriously mouths wise epithets like a Buddhist mentor. Acted by Sam Spruell, we don't know if we run away from this guy or give him a hug.
That's that. Season 5. The seductive pull of the entire “Fargo,” based on the Coen bros’ 1996 film and created by Noah Hawley, is its insane lineup of wackadoodle personalities and strange as people personas. Can't wait for Season 6.
“Better Call Saul” (Netflix) Season 6, legal crime drama, spin-off from “Breaking Bad,” to which it serves primarily as a prequel. I don’t get the sense of the last 3 or 4 episodes of the Finale season. Really. I got lost?
Expected in many popular, well-made series, the Finale seasons don't really amount to anything that is seen as compelling, revealing or mind-boggling. I was simply awaiting the end. I knew Lalo will die or be killed somehow but I didn't expect Nacho to die.
The first three seasons though were engaging and interesting, notably the older bro/younger bro tussle of love between Chuck (stellar Michael McKean) and Jimmy.
All in all though, acting was exemplary. Although I am not very impressed with Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler, Bob Odenkirk as the title guy is outstanding as usual. Special accolades to Tony Dalton as Lalo Salamanca, Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut, and support cast Tina Parker as Francesca and Josh Fadem as “The Camera Guy.”
