“Brooklyn.” “A Little White Lie.”

“Brooklyn” (2015, Amazon Prime) romantic period drama, based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Colm Tóibin, and stars Saoirse Ronan in the lead role. This movie, alluring in its simplicity, directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Hornby, received many nominations for industry and critics awards, including three nominations at the 88th Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actress for Ms Ronan.

The storyline isn’t so big a deal, in fact–predictable and can be languid or weary. But the overall production values of “Brooklyn” mesmerize and enthrall. The cinematography of Yves Bélanger rewarded François Séguin’s production design and Odile Dicks-Mireaux’s costume design with dramatic flair and aesthetic restraint. Not bombastic or spectacular, just enough to accentuate Eilis Lacey’s aura.

In a nutshell, that’s the movie. Pretty much. And oh Julie Walters’ short spot as Mrs Kehoe is fun! 🎥👍📽

“A Little White Lie” (2022, Hulu), indie comedy, about a handyman with the same name as a famous writer who is mistakenly invited to a literary festival and is welcomed by fans and writers, but is exposed as an impostor when the real Shriver arrives. But there’s more to it so you may ride with the intrigue and find out more. Stars the always-fine to watch Michael Shannon as Shriver, real or not real.

Whether he is a crazed damaged and troubled man (“Revolutionary Road, 2008), puritanical weird government agent (“Boardwalk Empire,” 2010-2014), honest and devoted FBI man (“Waco,” 2018), or a famous country singer (“George & Tammy,” 2022-2023), Michael Shannon is a must-see. And in “A Little…” he doesn’t disappoint. This movie is him front and center, regardless of Kate Hudson but Don Johnson’s T. Wasserman provides the other side of an entertaining weekend watch. 🎥💻📽

GAVE UP or I may revisit later. Movies: <>“Sleeping Dogs” (2024, Hulu). Russell Crowe’s role as an ex-cop afflicted with dementia is engaging. But the supporting characters (or actors) fail to complement. <>These two seem fine but didn’t grab me (yet) in the first 15 minutes. [ ] “Mr Turner” (2014, Hulu) directed by Mike Leigh, about English artist J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851). [ ] “Daliland” (2022, Hulu) about Salvador Dali, directed by Mary Harron.
