“Smile.” / “The Dead Don't Die.”
“Smile” (2022, Paramount+) psychological supernatural horror film written and directed by Parker Finn, in his feature directorial debut. A follow-up to his 2020 short film “Laura Hasn't Slept.” This little scare-ride has earned (so far) $217.4 million from a mere $17 million budget. Hence, the movie spawned a Part 2 in 2024, which I didn't bother to watch (after the first 2 or 3 sequences).
Story: Therapist Rose Cutter witnessed the bizarre suicide of a patient, then becomes overwhelmed with increasingly disturbing and daunting visions that lead her to believe she is experiencing something supernatural. Susie Bacon is Rose Cotter, a major reason why this screamer worked.
Sosie is the daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. She should get lead starring roles, hoping she won't be typecast as a “scream queen.” She shows more promise than that stereotype. 🎥💻📽
“The Dead Don't Die” (2019, Netflix) absurdist zombie comedy film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, follows a small town's police force as they combat a sudden zombie invasion. Silly little movie by indie icon Mr Jarmusch, featuring his favorite collaborators.
Nothing really unforgettable here other than watching some fine performers play ridiculous stuff. But the most fun is Tilda Swinton as Zelda, an eccentric katana-swinging Scottish who has recently bought the small town's funeral home. 🎥💻📽
