“The Apprentice."
“The Apprentice” (2024, Amazon Prime) biographical film that examines Donald Trump's career as a real estate businessman in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s, including his relationship with attorney Roy Cohn. Before I say more, first I'd praise the performance of Sebastian Stan as Mr Trump and Jeremy Strong as Mr Cohn. Kickass!
President Trump described the movie as a "defamatory, politically disgusting hatchet job" intended to harm his ultimately successful 2024 presidential campaign. Of course, he wouldn't like it, what do we expect? Prior to. clicking it to watch, I veered away from reviews, beyond the info that both lead actors were nominated in the last Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTA for their work. (Mr Strong also earned a SAG nomination.)
I was expecting a cartoonish showtime, regardless whether the indie film is all celebratory or defamatory of Donald. But neither. He is not exalted yet he isn't disparaged either. Or the usual manner a bio-flick of a globally controversial man as Donald Trump is tackled in cinema. “The Apprentice” is fair game.
Based on what we know of the man, Ali Abbasi's entertaining navigation of Gabriel Sherman's cold as ice, non-hating/non-loving script is admittedly remarkable. Editing as well is neat, crisp and tight. 🎥💻📽
GAVE UP. <>“Coriolanus” (2011, Amazon Prime) British film adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy “Coriolanus.” Places Shakespeare's original text and plot into a contemporary, pseudo-Balkan setting, reminiscent of the Yugoslav Wars. The Shakespearean wordage seems cool but I don't understand most of it, LOL! The movie and actors (with the great Vanessa Redgrave) are fine but the old English repartee distracts me.
PLACED on HOLD. <>“Electrick Children” (2012, Amazon Prime) independent coming of age film. Julia Garner plays Rachel, a 15-year-old girl from a fundamentalist Mormon community in Utah. After learning that she is pregnant, she believes she has conceived miraculously through listening to a song on a cassette tape. The plotline is interesting. But I don't see excitement yet after 15 minutes or so.
