“Riot Women” (Britbox) British series. Five women come together in Hebden Bridge to create a makeshift punk-rock band to enter a local talent contest but, in writing their first song, soon discover that they are all very angry about the way society treats women and that they have a lot to say.
Creator, writer and executive producer Sally Wainwright hits the right buttons and mixes the apt ingredients in giving us a delightful series. The intensity of the drama doesn't muddle the comic and witty intimacy of the sequences. And the ensemble performance is A-1 elite. Fierce, upfront, alluring. 🎥👍📽
“Obituary” (Hulu) 2 Seasons. Irish black comedy. A young woman obsessed with death becomes an obituarist for the local newspaper. The major reason why I clicked/watched this series is Siobhán Cullen. After I saw her in another Irish dark comedy, “Dobkin,” as the dreary but earnest and darkly alluring journalist Dubheasa Maloney, I knew I would devour her next project.
Ms Cullen's obit writer Elvira Clancy is not really a departure from Dove Maloney although Elvira is more complex. Still, Siobhan's sinister gaze and sexy smile carry this series that is replete with plot twists and oblique, asymmetrical characters.
It is easy to get lost on who killed who and what really is the motive of whoever in this wildly implausible but sedate toned thriller. Never mind though. I am honestly in love with Siobhan Cullen. I will marry her! 🎥💻📽
“The Curse” (Amazon Prime) 2 Seasons. British comedy crime drama. Series 1 is set in London in the early 1980s, following a gang of hopeless small-time crooks who, through their own stupidity and poor judgement, find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest gold heists in history.
The theme alludes to "The Curse of the Brink's-Mat millions “ referring to a series of deaths related to the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery.
